Angus Railway Group (ARG) was founded in 1972 for people interested in, primarily local railways. Whilst a small group, with the majority of members coming from Angus, Perthshire and North Fife, the Group has gradually grown and now has an average annual membership of about 40. The main interests are orientated towards railways and their history. During its existence, the Group has organised successful rail tours to local and national branch lines which were due for closure, and has regular indoor meetings between early September and May at the Woodlands Hotel in Broughty Ferry. Talks on rail routes long gone, preserved steam in action and foreign rail trips are regular items on the programme given by members and visitors. ARG have published three Steam Albums covering, Dundee and District, Angus and Perthshire.
The Group published a Journal for many years, copies still exist in members’ archives, but with the digital revolution the method on communication has to move with the times. As well as improving communication with the membership, there will be the opportunity to provide information for the general public who may have an interest in the history but are not local, or are not aware of the Group’s activities.
Although there is a strong theme of nostalgia in the Group, it is aware of the need to take an interest
In the future transport in the region and has had speakers from Scotrail and Network Rail talking on electrification developments and the Border Rail Project. In addition to the indoor programme, there are outdoor outings to preserved railways and visits have included the North Yorks Moors and the Bluebell Railway, visits to disused railways as well as travelling on recently reopened services to Bathgate and Alloa.
